Hotels that take a late arrival in their stride

Every good London hotel keeps a night manager, but some take a 01:00 arrival more easily than others. The house on Portland Place, facing Broadcasting House, keeps its front entrance staffed all night, and its lobby is wide enough that nobody watches who walks across it. The corner block just off Whitehall keeps its doors attended and its lobby lit at every hour, with the lifts a short walk from the entrance. The Edwardian block on High Holborn is entered through its own carriage courtyard, so a visitor steps out of a car in private rather than on the pavement.

South of the river, a copper fronted block sits on the Thames beside Blackfriars Bridge, with a reception that feels more like a bar than a counter. One to three: fewer names, emptier roads

Between one and three the city thins out. The roads are clearer, but fewer companions are awake and free, so allow an hour, sometimes a quarter more. This is the stretch where a precise first message counts most: with the hotel, the room and the length in one line, the desk can offer a name at once instead of asking questions.

Hotels past Zone 2, in Docklands or out by the airports, take longer again, and Henrietta will say so in her first line rather than let you wait on a hopeful time.

After three: plan the rest of the night

After three a single hour is still possible, but most guests find that a longer booking suits the hour better. From 03:00, four hours at £900 runs through to the breakfast trolley. The full overnight, ten hours for £1,800, is easiest to arrange before 20:00, so in the small hours the desk offers what can really be done rather than promise a whole night it cannot staff.

What the night manager sees

After midnight a hotel runs on a skeleton team: one or two people at reception, a security officer walking the floors, a porter near the door. Many central hotels lock the revolving door at night and open a side entrance instead, and a few ask any late visitor to wait while the guest is rung. None of it is aimed at you.

Tell the desk if your hotel works this way. You can walk down to the lobby yourself and bring her up, which is often the quickest route to the lift, or she can give your name at reception and wait while the call is made.

The late message, written once

Four things: the hotel's full name, the room number, your name as the booking shows it, and how long you would like. Add one line about the night if you wish, a drink first or straight up. Henrietta answers with a name and a time, usually within ten minutes; the three confirmation steps are laid out on booking. You give the fee to her yourself, in person, once she is at your door.

Who books after midnight

Late landings from New York and the Gulf. Guests back from a long dinner who would rather not end the evening with the minibar. Musicians and road crews after a show. Business travellers whose last meeting ran into the night. Molly and Tiffany in Soho, Nancy in Covent Garden and Luna in Mayfair are often free at this hour, though anyone on the rota may be.
