Karolina does not fill silences; she lets them do their work. It is the most restful thing about her and the reason guests who have talked all day tend to book her twice. Poised and discreet, she has a dry wit that arrives late and lands precisely, usually as one sentence you will repeat to someone else the next morning. She is the companion to bring to a table where every word will be remembered, because she chooses hers so carefully.
Long limbed, slim, 174 cm, she keeps the black hair long and straight and the palette severe: black, clean lines, one piece of silver. The eyes are brown and very steady. She is in her late twenties. She plays the piano seriously and has heard enough opera to warn you which act to stay awake for, and she speaks English carefully, never a word wasted.
Her ideal evening begins with English National Opera, in the grand old Coliseum auditorium with a globe turning on its roof. Afterwards she crosses the road to the St Martins Lane hotel for a drink in the low light, then walks you the long way back through Covent Garden, pointing out a doorway or a cornice you would never have noticed. Architecture walks are her other habit, and Somerset House by night is her favourite courtyard in London.

Karolina, after hours
Seven o'clock under the globe of the London Coliseum. Karolina has read the synopsis twice and tells you only what you need: who loves whom, who will not survive, and which aria is worth putting your glass down for. She sits perfectly still through the music. At the interval she offers one observation, never more, and it is usually funny. Afterwards, over to the hotel opposite, a table in its dim bar, a drink with very little in it but ice and gin. Then a roundabout walk home through the lanes, past shuttered market stalls and the actors' church, which she will tell you about only if you ask. At your hotel she takes the stairs if it is one floor and the lift if it is more, and the evening goes quiet in the best possible way.

Silence, for the first ten minutes. After that, whatever the hotel bar is playing, provided it is not more opera.

Hours and rates
For opera, book her £900 dinner date, four hours in all, and give the tickets a few days. A plain weeknight visit to a Strand or Aldwych hotel can usually be arranged the same day.
