Where odd hours are the only hours

An airport hotel is the one kind of building where nobody keeps normal hours. Crews check in mid afternoon to sleep, passengers check out at four in the morning, and the lobby at midnight holds people in suits, people in tracksuits and people who have just flown for fourteen hours. An evening guest does not stand out in that crowd. She could not if she tried.

That makes Heathrow's hotels the easiest desks in London. The questions here are not about discretion. They are about distance, timing, and which side of the airport you are on.

Walk to the terminal

Three hotels sit close enough to a terminal to reach on foot, which matters most on a tight connection or a very early flight.

Which terminal, which hotel

If the stay ends with a departure, choose the hotel by the terminal you fly from rather than the one you land at. Terminal 5 is home to British Airways, and the Sofitel or the Colnbrook Hilton makes that morning easy. Flying from Terminal 4, the Hilton on its walkway is the obvious choice. From Terminal 2 or 3, choose the Garden Inn or a Bath Road hotel a short hop away.

The Heathrow Express calls at Terminals 2 and 3 and at Terminal 5, while the Elizabeth line and the Piccadilly line reach Terminal 4 as well. For the companion this only affects timing: she travels by taxi, and the desk times her journey to your hotel door.

The Bath Road row and the Colnbrook edge

Along the northern edge of the airport, Bath Road is lined with large hotels built for the business traveller. The Renaissance London Heathrow is known for rooms that look straight onto the northern runway, a favourite with guests who like watching the heavy jets come in. The Radisson Blu Edwardian is a few minutes along the same road. The Hotel Hoppa buses link the row to the terminals, and a taxi takes a few minutes.

Bath Road hotels are quieter at night than the terminal hotels, with fewer people in the lobby and more space in the rooms. For a longer booking, that trade is often worth making.

The Hilton London Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 is not actually at the terminal but a short drive away in Colnbrook, with a shuttle between the two. It is a large, modern hotel, calm at night and generous with space, and a sensible choice when the Sofitel is full.

Tell the desk exactly which hotel you are in. Several near Heathrow carry very similar names, and one precise message saves her a wasted journey round the perimeter road.

Why Heathrow starts at three hours

Heathrow bookings start at three hours, £700, and the minimum exists for a plain reason. The airport is a long way from where the rota lives, and her journey out is counted within those three hours, so a one hour booking would mean more time on the M4 than in your company. The taxi fare is quoted beside the fee in the confirming message, so the whole figure is known before she sets off.

For an evening that runs longer, the four hour dinner length at £900 or a ten hour overnight at £1,800 suits an airport stay well: dinner in the hotel, a proper night's rest, breakfast before the flight.

Timing it around a flight

For an arrival, message the desk once you are through passport control rather than when the wheels touch down. Queues at the border vary, and a time given from the baggage hall is a time you can keep. For a departure, work backwards from the flight: the evening should end with room left for sleep and the walk to the terminal, not with a sprint to the gate.

Gatwick works the same way on a smaller scale.
