Canary Wharf's tower hotels, where a visitor is handled like a meeting

An estate that runs like an office

Canary Wharf is not quite like the rest of London. Most of it is a privately managed estate, with its own security teams, spotless public spaces and a rhythm set by the banks and law firms in the towers. The hotels share that temperament. Front desks are fast, polite and uninterested, lobbies are full of lanyards and wheeled cases, and a visitor who walks in with purpose is treated exactly like the next person with a meeting upstairs.

That is the whole appeal for an evening guest. Nobody in E14 is curious. They are busy, and a hotel full of busy people is a very private place to spend an evening.

The riverside and the quays

On the Thames at Westferry Circus, Canary Riverside Plaza has water on one side and the estate on the other, with suites looking down the river. It is the most residential in feel of the E14 hotels, and the calmest after dark.

North of the towers, the London Marriott at West India Quay is a curved glass building beside the old dock warehouses, which now hold restaurants and the Museum of London Docklands. The quayside is lively on weeknights and makes a pleasant few minutes' walk before going up.

Between the two, the riverside walk from Westferry Circus makes the most of the Thames at night, with the lights of Rotherhithe on the far bank and the river bending away towards Greenwich. For a guest who wants some air before or after an evening in, it is the prettiest ten minutes on the estate.

South Quay and the newer towers

Across the dock to the south, South Quay has become a district of new residential towers and hotels. The Hilton London Canary Wharf and the Novotel stand here, both large, modern and built for the business traveller. Tribe London Canary Wharf is newer again, aimed at a sociable working crowd, with a lobby that doubles as a lounge.

These are practical hotels rather than grand ones. Their virtue is that they are staffed all night, run their lifts efficiently, and keep the same polite distance between the desk and every guest.

The right room in a tower

In a tower hotel the room request matters more than the room type. Ask for a high floor, away from the lift, looking towards the river or the lit towers rather than into the side of the neighbouring block. A standard room high up, with One Canada Square glowing across the dock, makes a better evening than a larger room with nothing outside the window.

If you are in town for several nights, or return every few weeks, ask for the same room each time. Hotels in E14 are built around regular business guests and will usually note a preference on your profile.

How the tower desks handle a visitor

Tower hotels almost always tie their lifts to the room key, which decides the arrival plan for you. Collect her from the lobby and share the ride up; if she is staying the night, a spare key from reception saves a second trip down later. Where the hotel wants overnight guests on the registration, her first name is all it needs. In E14 that exchange takes about as long as signing for a parcel.

The one thing to avoid is improvising. A visitor waiting at a key card lift, or wandering into the wrong tower, draws exactly the kind of attention the estate's security staff are paid to give. Send the desk the exact hotel and entrance, and she will arrive at the right door the first time.

Weeknights, weekends and the way in

Canary Wharf fills from Monday to Thursday and drains away on Friday afternoon. Thursday is the busiest night in the bars; Saturday is quiet enough to hear water lapping in the docks. Both work. A weekday visit after a long day in a tower is the classic E14 booking, and a weekend stay makes the most of a district with almost nobody in it.

Getting there is simple. Three lines serve the estate, the Jubilee, the Elizabeth and the DLR, and river boats call at the pier beside Canary Riverside. Canary Wharf is in Zone 2, so no fare is added to the fee.

Dinner without leaving the estate

Canary Wharf has grown a restaurant scene of its own, so an evening here need not involve a taxi at all. There are tables in the malls beneath the towers, along the quaysides and around Wood Wharf, the newer neighbourhood on the eastern side, and the roof garden above the Elizabeth line station at Crossrail Place makes a calm green place for a short walk before dinner. Everything is lit, level and close together.

For a dinner followed by the hotel, the suite dinner length of four hours suits the district well, and the walk from table to lift is rarely more than ten minutes.

Companions for an E14 evening

Nobody on the rota lives in Canary Wharf, but the Elizabeth line has cut the journey from the West End to well under twenty minutes.
