Statuesque: nine companions, sorted by the dress code on the invitation

Nine women on the rota stand 172 cm or taller before heels, from Angelika and Patricia at 172 to Violetta at 178. In a hotel that height is useful for a practical reason: a tall companion carries formal clothes well, and she is easy to find again across a crowded ballroom or a busy terminal.

Samanta, 174 cm, dresses in fitted black with a single statement earring and handles a business dinner like a quartet in which the host always sounds good. Violetta favours a column dress and a gold cuff, and prefers the four hour booking with the restaurant known in advance. Karolina, 174 cm, keeps a severe palette, black with one piece of silver, and knows which act of an opera to stay awake for. Milena, 175 cm, likes patent heels and a sharp shoulder, and decides quickly. Angelika swaps the tennis whites for a narrow dark dress and heels that last until midnight, usually starting at the Rivoli Bar at The Ritz. Michelle, 173 cm, prefers rose tones and fabric that moves, and is happiest at a hotel bar with a serious bartender, asking about your day before her own.

Stacy is the tallest after Violetta at 176 cm and dresses for nightlife: a metallic jacket, leather, silver at the wrists. Her favourite late show is in a Drury Lane comedy basement, and she is often free at short notice. Patricia goes the other way, soft and bohemian, a flowing dress and a scarf that has travelled, for a Mayfair bookshop and a lamplit bar.

Vanessa, 173 cm, wears the calm coastal look of someone who spends a good deal of time at terminals: stripes, wide trousers and a scarf light enough for a cabin. She meets guests at hotels around Paddington and out at Heathrow, where an airport booking runs three hours at least, £700 with her travel inside it.

Meeting at a formal event

A black tie evening rarely begins in your room. Tell the desk where the night starts, the hotel lobby, the foot of the ballroom stairs, the table plan by the cloakroom, and the time printed on the invitation, and your companion will be waiting at that spot at that minute, dressed for the room rather than for the cameras. If there is a seating plan, a first name is all it needs.

Several of the nine wear heels that put them level with the doorman, and not one of them minds. If the evening includes a long walk, say so when you book; she will choose shoes for the pavement as well as the room.
