Samanta, the set

On Samanta

  • Mayfair, W1K
  • Violin and design hotels
  • Slim, 174 cm
  • Brown eyes, long dark brown hair

Based in Mayfair, and happy to travel to any hotel in town.

Samanta keeps a private list of the best hotel staircases in London, and she will show it to you if you ask nicely. Design hotels are her hobby: the Art Deco lobby of Claridge's, new rooms behind old facades, the great domed rotunda at Ten Trinity Square beside the Tower. She notices proportion, light and the way a marble floor holds the evening sun, and she notices people in the same composed, attentive way. Ask her for the finest lift in the West End and she will name it without hesitation.

Samanta stands 174 cm, slim, with dark brown hair falling long over one shoulder and brown eyes, and she dresses in sleek noir: black, fitted, a single statement earring. She is in her late twenties and has a magnetic stillness that draws attention without asking for it. She plays the violin, mostly Bach, mostly late, and is learning Italian verbs on the Tube, although every booking runs in English and she is honest about the verbs.

East is where her best evenings go. A drink at the Four Seasons at Ten Trinity Square, under the dome of a building that once ran the business of the Port of London, then dinner in the City and a walk past the Tower in the dark. She treats a business dinner like a well rehearsed quartet: everyone gets a part, nobody plays too loudly, and the host always sounds good. Back in Mayfair she likes a nightcap at Claridge's before the last lift of the night.

Samanta lives in Mayfair and travels happily to the City for dinner. She prefers everything settled by mid afternoon; send Henrietta the hotel, the restaurant if you have one, and the time.

After dark Samanta

Samanta, after hours

Samanta arrives at Ten Trinity Square five minutes early and spends them looking at the ceiling. When you find her she is standing under the dome, and she tells you, quietly, one thing about the building you would never have guessed. A drink in the rotunda, something clear and very cold. Dinner in the City, where she talks to your colleagues or clients with complete ease and asks each of them exactly one good question. Afterwards the Tower is floodlit across the road and she suggests walking past it before the cab. Back in Mayfair, one last drink in the Art Deco glow at Claridge's, and she mentions, almost as an aside, that she will be practising the violin tomorrow at six.

FAQ 03

Samanta, answering

3 things guests tend to ask before booking, answered in Samanta's own words.

Proportion and light. A room can be simple and still perfect if the ceilings are the right height and the windows face the right way.

Bach, one of the slow movements. It is the only music that sounds better at two in the morning than at two in the afternoon.

Happily. Tell me who will be at the table and what the evening is for, and I will be the easiest guest there. I never talk shop unless asked.

Notes on Samanta

No notes on file for Samanta yet, and the desk will never invent one. Guests add a note only once a booking has actually taken place; it shows nothing but their first name and when it was written, and Henrietta reads every one before it is posted.

Should Samanta want a note about her withdrawn, it comes down the same day.
