Knightsbridge hotel nights, SW1X and SW7: an escort to your suite once the shops close

Between the park and Sloane Street

The Knightsbridge hotels sit in a tight triangle between Hyde Park, Sloane Street and the Brompton Road. We list them purely as reference points. Not one of them has a link with the desk, and she comes and goes as your visitor, which is all a hotel ever needs to know.

Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, SW1X 7LA, whose rear rooms look straight onto the park and whose restaurant, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, is the obvious first stop. The Bulgari Hotel, SW7 1DW, dark wood and silver, with a small screening room tucked below the street. At the Sloane Street end, Jumeirah Carlton Tower, SW1X 9PY, rising over the private gardens of Cadogan Place. The Berkeley on Wilton Place, SW1X 7RL, where the Blue Bar wears a shade borrowed from Lutyens. The Wellesley, SW1X 7LY, a slim hotel at the Hyde Park Corner end of Knightsbridge. The Knightsbridge Hotel, SW3 1PT, a townhouse on the cul de sac of Beaufort Gardens, a minute off the Brompton Road.

The mansion flats of Hans Crescent and the serviced apartments around Basil Street work exactly like any hotel room.

Knightsbridge, Hyde Park Corner, Sloane Square

Knightsbridge station opens almost onto the hotel doors, about 1 minute away, with one exit on the Brompton Road and another on Sloane Street; it is a Piccadilly line stop. Hyde Park Corner, one stop east on that same line, leaves the Wellesley and the Berkeley about 5 minutes away on foot. For the Circle and District, walk south from the Carlton Tower end to Sloane Square, roughly 9 minutes.

The Piccadilly line also runs straight out to Heathrow, which is why so many long haul guests reach a Knightsbridge hotel without changing trains once. In the evening, though, companions travel by car, and that journey is part of the tariff.

How a suite arrival runs

Some Knightsbridge suites come with their own butler or a private entrance hall, and some guests prefer that nobody on the staff is asked to do anything at all. Tell the desk which you would like. You can meet her in the lobby, she can walk up alone to a room number you have shared, or she can wait in the bar until you come down. Whichever you choose, she arrives dressed for the setting, which in this district means the Brompton Road rather than the dance floor.

Before she leaves, Henrietta confirms three details a single time over WhatsApp: the name you are registered under, your hotel, your room. Then you get a time. You settle the fee with her face to face as she arrives, and never with anyone else.

The Brompton Road clock

Inside Zone 1 and a short drive from most of the rota, a Knightsbridge hotel is usually reached within the hour of confirmation. The slow moments are predictable: Saturday closing time on the Brompton Road, when taxis queue outside Harrods, and the evenings when a concert at the Albert Hall lets out and Kensington Gore fills in both directions. Book slightly ahead on those nights, or name a time and let the desk work back from it.

Summer is the busiest season here, when long stays run from June into September and the most requested names on the rota are asked for days in advance. If there is someone in particular you hope to see, send the date early.

Who stays, and who writes

Knightsbridge guests tend to stay longer than Mayfair ones. Visitors on a fortnight of shopping and appointments, residents of the red brick mansion blocks who want a companion for a quiet dinner at home, business travellers with a meeting on Sloane Street and an early flight from Heathrow. Many book the dinner length, four hours at £900, and a fair number the overnight at £1,800.

One evening on the triangle

A guest at the Mandarin Oriental spends the afternoon on Sloane Street and books, at six, a three hour evening beginning at eight. At ten to eight she is in the lobby. They take a table at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal overlooking the park, then walk along the Knightsbridge pavement to the Berkeley for one drink in the Blue Bar. The walk back takes four minutes. The last hour passes upstairs over tea and conversation, the park dark beyond the windows, and at eleven she is on her way home.

Home district: Knightsbridge

Bianka, Margo and Sonya are the three companions based in Knightsbridge, close enough to walk to several of the hotels above. When one of them is on shift, a late request here can be answered faster than almost anywhere else in town. The rest of the rota comes to SW1X and SW7 as well, at the same rates, so the choice can rest on who suits your evening.

Across Sloane Street and beyond

Cross Sloane Street and you are in Belgravia, all stucco squares and cobbled mews. Walk west along the Brompton Road past the V&A and you reach the South Kensington hotels, with Kensington further on beside the gardens. Hyde Park Corner leads east into Mayfair. A booking can start in one and finish in another at no extra cost.
